Working History — 1900-1914
Telephone, candlestick telephone
This is an early example of the 'candlestick' pattern telephone. Candlestick telephones appeared when the new 'central battery' exchanges came into use. The first of these appeared in Britain in 1900. Previously telephones had to incorporate a local battery. The primitive nature of the transmitter (microphone) in this type of telephone meant that the caller had to hold the phone at a particular angle to make it work.
