Social History — 1935-1955
Sign, shop sign
This sign was taken from the shop owned by paper merchant C.N. Katz at 92 Brick Lane. The last Jewish-owned business on Brick Lane, the shop closed in the late 1990s. Mr Katz had traded on Brick Lane for over fifty years.
Before World War Two, Spitalfields was a major hub of London's Jewish community. Numbers declined significantly after the war with the Great Synagogue on Brick Lane closing in the 1960s. The East End Jewish community mainly dispersed to areas of north and west London in this period.
