Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1810
The Adelphi Terrace
The building of the Adelphi by the Adam brothers took 1765-72 and nearly brought about the bankruptcy. It was conceived in a grand manner by Robert Adam and much influenced by the Palace of Diocletian at Spalato which he had visited in 1757. The wharf was too low and flooded at high tide, the Ordnance Department failed to rent the vaults and despite Garrick's move to a house in the centre of the terrace many houses remained unsold. The brothers were forced to dispose of the entir property by lottery. It was much altered in the nineteenth century and demolished in 1936.
