Cable, telegraph cable
This is a section of the telegraph cable laid across the English Channel between Dover and Cap Gris-Nez in 1850. It was the first international submarine cable link. The cable consisting of copper wire insulated by gutta-percha was held down on the seabed by lead weights. Although the cable was laid successfully the link only lasted for a few hours.
