Cable, telegraph cable
Sample of the armoured submarine telegraph cable used in the second attempt to establish a telegraph link across the English Channel between Dover and Calais laid successfully in 1851. It contains 4 copper conductors and is strengthened by being spun rope-like within a covering of armour wires. The sample consists of twisted bundles of wires, with copper collars at each end. Previous cross-channel cable had been too flimsy to transmit clear messages, but this armoured cable gave the UK its first international telecommunications link.
