Working History — 1866
Cable, telegraph cable
Sample of the submarine telegraph cable laid by the Atlantic Telegraph Company in 1865. Of the longer deep-water type of cable, the most obvious difference between this piece and its 1865 predecessor is that the yarn covering on this piece is left untarred. The 1866 cable was completed without too much difficulty, after which the expedition picked up and completed the abandoned 1865 cable. This sample consists of twisted bundles of wires and has brass collars at each end.
