Telephone
This Model 312L telephone in red bakelite was manufactured by Plessey for the General Post Office. The Plessey firm was established in 1917 as a mechanical engineering business and later moved into manufacturing radios, televisions and telephones. In the 1950s the company underwent a massive expansion and, following a merger with the British Ericsson Telephone Company in 1961, became Britain's largest telecommunications manufacturer. At this time customers could not purchase telephones but had to rent them from the GPO.
