A Broom Seller; Balais Balais
The French sculptor Edme Bouchardon, made a large number of drawings of Parisian street traders. The trades depicted are similar to those of London – barrel makers, oyster sellers, broom sellers as well as servants and apprentices. However, Bouchardon's images have a restrained quality which is in marked contrast to contemporary depictions of London street traders. English prints in this vain tend to be either sentimental or comic.
The drawings were published as a series sixty prints in five suites under the title 'Etudes prises dans le bas peuple ou les cris de Paris' engraved by the Comte de Caylus.
