Habits of the Women at Strasbourg
Seven figures on one plate, inscribed, Habits of the Women at Strasbourg/A Country Wife/A Peasant/A Tradesman's wife in mourning/A Burgher's Daughter/A Burgher's Wife in mourning/A Doctor's Wife/A Woman in mourning, c. 1650.
Seven women of different ranks are depicted, all dressed for different occasions.
This series seem to fit in the oeuvre of Wenceslaus Hollar, though this is not confirmed. Wenceslaus Hollar (1607 – 1677), was a draughtsman and etcher from Prague. Mainly active in Germany, he visited the Netherlands in 1634 and joined the service of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel in 1636. The earl brought the artist to London where he focused mainly on book-illustration and cartography. He joined Lord Henry Howard in his expedition to Tangiers, but afterwards continued his work as an illustrator. He died in London in reduced circumstances.
