Printed Ephemera — 1937-1938
The West Indies Today
This booklet was published by the International African Service Bureau, (IASB) a non-party, pan African organisation established in London in 1937 to fight for the democratic rights, civil liberties and self-determination of those iving under British rule, particularly in Africa and the Caribbean. Founding members included Trinidadian born George Padmore and Kenyan Jomo Kenyatta.
Such publications were intended to enlighten public opinion in the UK, especially the working and middle classes to the abuses and injustices that existed within the British Colonies in Africa and the Caribbean. The Bureau also aimed to gain the support of the British population in agitating for constitutional reform in the Colonies, such as the granting of freedom of speech and movement of 'colonial peoples'. As well as producing informative pamphlets to increase public awareness of their cause, the IASB held weekly public gatherings in Hyde Park and spoke at Labour party and Trade Union meetings.
