The facade of Barkers of Kensington
Reginald Gray made this drawing of Barkers department store in Kensington. Gray came to London from Dublin in 1957, after some success as a stage designer. He said: 'The first jobs I got in London were designing the window displays for Barkers, Whiteleys and Harvey Nichols ... I was fascinated by the scaffolding structures at Barkers because back in Dublin I had never seen anything on such a scale'. The artist had his first show in 1960 and was considered part of the School of London, led by Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud.
