The B.U.F. was a political party formed in 1932 by ex-Labour government minister Sir Oswald Mosley. At its height, the union attracted 50,000 members and was particularly active in London’s East End, hoping to exploit the anti-semitism that sometimes simmered beneath the surface.
The 'blackshirt' of the newspaper's title refers to the black shirts worn by supporters of the union. From the late 1930s the party adopted a policy of anti-semitism.
