Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1861
The Houses of Parliament from Millbank
When Roberts painted this picture, the Thames was still a working river. Barges occupy the foreground, with the Houses of Parliament and the new Westminster Bridge sun-lit beyond. This is the first of four paintings the artist made of London from the Thames. Roberts wrote: 'I have long thought that the river Thames and London itself was as good, if not better, than many things we go to other countries to look for’.
