The Groundsel Man. "Chick-weed and Grun-sell!"
Engraved illustration based on a photograph showing a street seller of groundsell and chickweed. These were sold as food for songbirds. The seller wears a stovepipe hat and a frock coat. He carries a wicker basket on his back full of plants, and is holding a walking stick and a bunch of the plants. The illustration was published in Henry Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor: The condition of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work', Vol. 1., 'London Street-Folk', first published in 1861. No. 12 page 177.
