Printed Ephemera — 1925
London's Tramways: Southwark Bridge
Advertising poster commissioned by London County Council Tramways to promote their tram services serving the newly reopened Southwark Bridge. The poster was designed by Oliver Burridge, one of several students at the Central School of Arts and Crafts commissioned to design tramway posters for the LCC. Together with other posters promoting London's tramways this design was exhibited in the British pavilion at the 1925 Paris exhibition of modern industrial decorative art.
Southwark Bridge was rebuilt by the Corporation of London in 1921. It was designed to relieve cross-river traffic congestion but many thought it was built in the wrong place.
