Coronet
Silver gilt coronet worn by Gertie Millar at the Coronation George VI in 1937. The musical comedy star had become Gertrude, Countess of Dudley on her marriage to William Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley (1867-1932) in 1924. This type of coronet decorated with eight strawberry leaves alternating with eight silver balls raised on points was traditionally worn by Earls and Countesses at Royal Coronations. The coronet has ermine edging, a deep red silk velvet cap of estate and a tassel of gold bullion and thread. The coronet and associated robe was later purchased by Countess Jowitt and worn by her at the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Lesley Stewart (1889-1970), nee McIntyre, the wife of William Allen Jowitt (1885-1957), 1st Earl Jowitt donated the robes and coronet to the museum.
