Smock
Blue cotton smock with hand embroidered floral motifs on yoke and cuff (1890-1910). The smock was a popular garment in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, worn by women while working in situations which required protection for their clothing. It was a standard garment for many women artists. This smock was worn by Isabella Jane Bayne, a Christian who worked amongst the poor in London. There are three white paint marks on the front of the smock.
