Social History — C. 1850
Signboard
This signboard was originally hung at St Paul's Church for Seamen located at Dock Street. The wooden board is painted black with gold signage listing the services taking place at the church, although the lettering on the bottom half of the sign has now faded. St Paul's Church for Seamen was built in 1846-1847 by William Cubitt and Company to a design by Henry Roberts. The cost of building the church was met by donations from both wealthy Londoners and ordinary sailors. An Evangelical Anglican church it could hold a congregation of up to 800, many of whom worked at the nearby London and St Katherine's dock. The Church closed in 1968.
