Social History — 1915-1918
Sign, hospital train sign
This metal sign was previously attached to one of the two ambulance trains donated by the UK Flour Millers Association to the Red Cross during World War I. The two purpose built trains, built by the Great Western and Great Eastern Railways, were designed and equipped specifically to operate as ambulance and hospitals run by the British Red Cross. By 1915 the ambulance trains were working on the front line in France offering first-line treatment to injured servicemen and transporting them to field hospitals. A third ambulance train was converted from ordinary French rolling stock and together the three trains carried 461,844 patients.
