Mourning Card for Prince Albert
Prince Albert died at Windsor Castle at the age of 42. His death had a profound and lasting impact on Queen Victoria as she retreated into a long period of mourning and seclusion lasting over five years. Prince Albert probably died of typhoid although other diseases have been suggested.
This embossed mourning card with black border has a portrait of Prince Albert in a central cartouche. There is a grieving figure, representing Britannia, and lion on the left, and an angel holding a wreath on the right. Above, the portrait is the royal coat of arms. The initials W.W. appear below the portrait which are for William Wyon, the well known engraver and medallist. The card carries the words 'BORN AUG 26 1819', 'DIED DEC 14 1861' and 'IN MEMORY of HRH THE PRINCE CONSORT' and the maker's name is identified as 'J WINDSOR LONDON'.
