Social History — 1937-1938
Desk, reception desk
This semi-oval wooden reception desk came from the Finsbury Health Centre, which opened in 1938. The Health Centre was built from 1936 as a municipal response to the Public Health (London) Act of 1936, to improve health services in the borough. It was designed in a modernist style by Berthold Lubetkin, a Russian Jewish émigré and lead architect for the Tecton practice. Dr. Chuni Lal Katial, Chairman of Finsbury's Public Health Committee, was a driving force behind the new Centre, and later became the borough's first Asian mayor.
