Social History — C. 1983
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was produced as part of the Greater London Council (GLC) campaign against nuclear weapons ('nukes') and nuclear energy. In 1980 Manchester City Council declared the city a 'nuclear free zone'. Many local authorities followed suit across the country. At the 1981 GLC election the Labour Party emerged victorious with Ken Livingstone becoming leader of the council.
A vocal opponent of Margaret Thatcher, Livingstone clashed with the national Conservative government on many occasions and was vilified in the right-wing press. The GLC adopted an anti-nuclear stance by campaigning against nuclear weapons and the transportation of nuclear waste through London by train.
