Social History — C. 1984
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was produced during the Greater London Council (GLC) campaign to retain local government control over London Transport (LT). The slogan 'Save London Transport' is printed over LT's logo.
The GLC was created by the Greater London Government Act of 1963 and came into being in 1965. At the 1981 GLC election the Labour Party emerged victorious with Ken Livingstone becoming leader of the council. A vocal opponent of Margaret Thatcher, Livingstone clashed with the national Conservative government on many occasions and was frequently attacked in the tabloid press.
The GLC's transport policies, in particular its 'Fares Fair' scheme which slashed tube and bus fares by 32 per cent, proved enormously popular among Londoners. Despite this GLC control over London Transport was ended in 1984 and the council itself was abolished in 1986.
