Decorative arts — 1851-1852
Plate, commemorative plate
The Great Exhibition of the works of industry of all nations was conceived by Prince Albert and Henry Cole. Their aim was to improve the manufacture and design of British goods and to cultivate public taste. In a spectacular temporary exhibition building, the Crystal Palace, in Hyde Park, more than 100,000 exhibits from all parts of the world were put on display. On 1 May 1851, Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition.
This commemorative plate is decorated with a central transfer print of the Great Exhibition building in Hyde Park with visitors in the foreground. Vignettes representing art and science with laurel leaf swags fill the border.
