Printed Ephemera — 1825
The Tunnel
The tunnel between Wapping and Rotherhithe was designed by the engineer Sir Marc Isambard Brunel. Construction began in 1825 but was frequently halted due to financial shortfalls, strikes, flooding and accidents. The Thames Tunnel finally opened in 1843 and remains in use today by the East London line.
Peepshows of the Thames Tunnel became popular souvenirs. In 1855, the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne observed that all along the tunnel 'in little alcoves, there are stalls or shops, kept principally by women, who, as you approach, are seen through the dusk, offering for sale views of the Tunnel.'
