An Historical Guide to Shoreditch, How to Visit the Ruins
Dant's painting is a satirical, cartoon-style map of Shoreditch in the year 3000. As a Shoreditch resident, Dant created the work from his daily observations of the area and it is highly characteristic of his intricate, highly-detailed style. The area has been transformed into an underwater future world, with scientific advances changing community life and buildings. The artist focuses on the fear and implications of new technology on the city in a witty and humorous way. In a statement, Dant explained that 'this map, though its status as fiction is quite apparent, applies research into the realm of 'futureology' to a locality with its own specific life, history and population as a provocation as well as an entertainment'.
