Printed Ephemera — 1903
In Dahomey
The musical 'In Dahomey' transferred from New York to London in May 1903. The cast consisted entirely of Black American performers. Among them was the comedy dance team of Bert Williams and George Walker. Their version of the 'Cakewalk' and 'Buck and Wing' caused a sensation in London dancehalls. They are pictured in the postcard on the right, which they have signed. A royal command performance of the musical at Buckingham Palace secured the show's success and it subsequently toured Britain. At least three cast members then settled in London.
