This axe was used during World War II by firemen of C district of the London Fire Brigade based at East India Docks. The axe was attached to the Fireman's uniform by a webbing belt holster. In 1941 the London Fire Brigade became part of the National Fire Service and C district became known at 36 Fire Force of the National Fire Service.
