Printed Ephemera — 1792
The Executors & Family of Sir Joshua Reynolds return their thanks...
Funeral card printed with an image of a woman representing Fame, holding an urn and leaning grief stricken on a tomb on which lie a palette and brushes and sprays of roses and laurel. Her trumpet rests on the ground at her side. A cherub tugs at her trying to attract her attention. The tomb is inscribed, 'SUCCEDET FAMA/VIVUSQUE PER ORA/FERETUR'. The text printed on the card reads, 'The Executors & Family of Sir Joshua Reynolds return their thanks for the tribute of respect paid to departed Genius & Virtue, by your attendance at the funeral of that illustrious painter & most aimiable man, in St. Paul's Cathedral, on Saturday, March 3d 1792'.
