The Funeral Car
This souvenir flyer would have been sold to the crowds lining the streets on the day who had come to watch the procession and pay their respects to Lord Nelson.
This handbill is printed with an illustration of and details of the inscriptions on Nelson's funeral car and coffin. The elaborate vehicle was designed by Rudolph Ackermann in imitation of the hull of the 'Victory'. The inscription on one side of the car was the motto 'HOSTE DEVICTO REQUIEVIT' (Having conquered the enemy, he is at rest) and
on the other 'PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT' (Let him bear the palm who hath won it). The latter motto formed part of Nelson's coat of arms. The handbill also specified that the lower part of the car was 'decorated with Escutcheons on each side, between which were inscribed, on one side the words, SAN JOSEF, and L'ORIENT and on the other, TRINIDAD, and BUCENTAURE' with on the 'Festoon below, on each side, the word, TRAFALGAR'.
