Printed Ephemera — 1910
The Japan-British Exhibition at White City, 1910
Poster promoting the Japan-British Exhibtion, held at White City, in 1910. Designed by the artist W.H. Barribal (active 1907-25) the poster celebrates the political union of Japan and Britain by depicting Britannia and a Japanese woman holding aloft their respective national flags. For the Japan-British Exhibition White City was transformed into an oriental wonderland. Miniature Japanese gardens surrounded by pagodas were built and visitors could ride on a unique mono-railway up into a mountain reminiscent of Mount Fuji.
