Decorative arts — 1737-1760
Ticket, season ticket
Season tickets for the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens were issued by the proprietor Jonathan Tyers between 1737 and 1760. A thousand were struck for each season. Standard admission to the Gardens cost one shilling, but a season ticket like this one cost one guinea. Tyers deliberately kept entrance prices low in order to attract a broad clientele to the Gardens.
Tickets featured scenes from classical mythology on the obverse and typically the subscriber's name and ticket number on the reverse. This one features Arion, a figure from Greek mythology, riding a dolphin. This season ticket belonged to 'Philip Percival' but has no number.
