Blunderbuss
This blunderbuss is a muzzle-loading weapon with a flintlock firing mechanism. The gunmaker, Edward Bate, was a contractor to the Board of Ordnance at the Tower of London between 1779 and 1783. Bate originally specialised in air guns and had a workshop on Brownlow Street off Longacre in the City of London.
There is a floral pattern engraved on the brass mounts on the butt and the stock. A floral and acorn design has been engraved on the brass trigger guard. The gun has been stamped with both view and proof marks by the London Gunmakers' Company. Guns were 'proofed' (test fired) at the Company's Proof House to guarantee their quality.
