Printed Ephemera — 1935
Railway map
This map of London's Underground railways was designed by Harry Beck. Beck's diagrammatic tube map was commissioned by the new London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. Beginning with the earlier map design by F.H.Stingemore, Beck created something more conceptual yet equally practical. The map's neatness and efficiency not only suited the spirit of the 1930s but also created an instant design classic. Effective signage and mapping was an important tool in the smooth running of the underground system.
