Printed Ephemera — 1850-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a 'quack' with a counter covered in bottles that reads, 'Perscriptions Made Up.' The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse, 'You spoony, pasty, looking pill, Your looks are quite enough to kill, Such horrid stuff as that you sell, Would make a sick Gorilla yell. Go empty out your filthy stock, And dump it in the nearest dock; Or on your back I'll have you laid, And fed upon your stock in trade.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
