Social History — 1930-1965
London County Council
This block of soap was collected from St Leonard's Children's Home in Hornchurch Road, Essex. The Home was built in 1889 by the poor-law guardians of the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch to house orphans and destitute children. The 80 acre site comprised 11 cottages, each originally for 30 children with a school, workshops, bakery, swimming bath and clinic. It was extended in the 1890s. The home was taken over by the London County Council in 1930, and in 1965 by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The London County Council stamp on the bar of soap suggests it dates from the time when the LCC were in charge of the home.
