Museum of London Archaeology Service — Late Medieval; mid 14th century
Animal remains, animal bone, mount
This bone mount is in the form of a young knight. He has fashionable curly hair and is kneeling with his sword at his side and his hand raised as if in supplication or awe. This bone figure, carved in low relief, was probably fastened with others to a wooden panel. It may have been part of a religious scene from a portable altarpiece, in which the knight is kneeling before the Virgin and Child or a saint, or is one of the guards at the tomb of Christ, awestruck as Christ rises from the grave.
