Social History — 1846
Telescopic view, perspective view, peepshow
Rather crude perspective or telescopic view of the Thames Tunnel. Contained within two card covers covered with marbled paper. The inner front cover is printed with 'a brief account' of the construction of the Tunnel. The perspective has a blue card front with three holes, forming a triangle, for viewing purposes. Applied to the blue card is a hand coloured print showing a view of Rotherhithe from Wapping. The perspective, viewed through the holes, is also hand coloured and embellished with applied cut out card figures. The peepshow was produced by Azulay whose address is noted as the 'Thames Tunnel'. He operated one of the trade counters located between the western & eastern archways of the tunnel that published and sold views, models and souvenirs of the tunnel to tourists visiting this major visitor attraction.
