Printed Ephemera — 1851-1860
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a tea maker. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse 'Your sloe leaves do not suit my taste, No Birch brooms, though cut e'er so fine, To marry you I' not in haste, Though you're a spicy Valentine. I like a cup of Genuine Tea, Indeed it gives me much delight, But your Best mixt, won't do for me, Go, put your birch brooms out of sight.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
