Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1982-1983
Reece Mews interior London 1982
This monochrome and impressionistic watercolour depicts 7 Reece Mews, the studio where Francis Bacon lived and painted from 1961 until his death in 1992. It was made by Michael Clark at a time when he was engaged in painting a series of portraits of Bacon. Although sketchy, it captures a sense of the creative chaos in which the latter worked, with brushes in mugs, a table laden with rags and papers, and the paint-daubed walls that Bacon used as a palette. One of his canvases is turned to the wall at the right.
