Printed Ephemera — 1819
Handbill, flyer
Mademoiselle Lefort was born in France on 22nd March 1799. She arrived in London, aged 19 and exhibited at a number of locations including 8 Gerrard Street, Soho, Spring Gardens and 3 Beaufort Street as indicated on this flyer.
An engraving of Mademoiselle Lefort depicted with a full beard and wearing her exhibition dress and headdress was included in the 1820 publication 'Kirby's Wonderful and Eccentric Museum; Or, Magazine of Remarkable Characters' In his description to accompany the engraving Kirby noted that, although Lefort dressed as a woman while on display she chose to dress as a man when 'walking in the streets' wearing a green jacket, white trousers and round hat. Kirby also noted Mademoiselle Lefort earned a substantial income by displaying herself in both private and public exhibitions in London that enabled her to 'retire immediately' on her return to France.
