Printed Ephemera — 1797
The Loyal Sailor or No Mutineering
Ballad entitled 'The Loyal Sailor or No Mutineering, being a song fit to be sung on board of all His Majesty's ships'. Printed as an eight page pamphlet by John Marshall for the 'Cheap Repository for Moral and Religious Tracts' and sold for one halfpenny. The ballad gives an account of the Mutiny on the Nore 'which caused so much astonishment throughout this loyal nation'. On the front cover is an illustration of sailors aboard ship.
The ballad was written by Hannah More, and depicts the loyal sailor as a simple but honest man who is tempted away from his loyalty by bad and disaffected men. The City of London took a similar stand during the mutiny setting up a fund to reward acts of loyalty during the mutiny itself.
