Printed Ephemera — 1973-03
Spare Rib
March 1973 edition of Spare Rib, the woman's news magazine. On the front cover is a graphic depicting a photograph of a housewife with, in the foreground, an oversized iron, teapot and cotton reel. Below is the caption 'It needn't be a chore'. Features within this edition include articles on how the cultural revolution has affected the lives of Chinese women, an interview with the sculpture Evelyn Williams and simple hints for non-expert dress makers. The magazine also includes regular features and a news section that highlights recent events affecting the lives of women.
The feminist Spare Rib magazine was first published in June 1972 and ceased publication in 1993. From the outset the aim of the magazine was to investigate and present alternatives to the traditional gender roles for women as virgin, wife or mother.
