Printed Ephemera — 1831-1850
Miss Darnley as Columbine / Mr Howell as Harlequin
Uncoloured theatrical print or double character plate engraved with portraits of the actors Miss Darnley in the role of Columbine and Mr Howell in the role of a Harlequin. Publisher unknown, such portraits would have been sold uncoloured for colouring and tinselling at home.
These are two characters from the harlequinade, which was a short comic play performed after a longer, more serious drama. The characters were all stylised and the audience would have recognised the characters immediately. The harlequniade and pantomime were both parts of the same performance, although only the pantomime is still staged.
