Section of the Rotunda in the Bank of England
Section of the Rotunda in the Bank of England, J Soane Arch't. The Rotunda was built circa 1795 and demolished 1925. Sir John Soane's rebuilding started in 1788: he remained the Bank's architect until 1833. His interiors were destroyed by Sir Herbert Baker's rebuilding in the 1920s and 1930s. "An attractive and uncommon antique print - a cross-section of Soane's domed Rotunda - seemingly taken from his original drawings. The Rotunda served for many years as the market-place for the buying and selling of stocks. Even after 1801, when members of the Stock Exchange opened their own building, this use continued until the Bank finally outlawed the rowdy jobbers and brokers in 1838. Engraved by the London draughtsman, engraver, printer and printseller, T. Prattent (fl.1790-1819), who had premises in Cloth Fair. Originally produced for the 'European Magazine'.
