King Charles 1st Porter & Dwarf / Boar in East Cheap
King Charles 1st Porter & Dwarf / Boar in East Cheap. From "Some Account of London: By Thomas Pennant, Esq." (1726-98). Pennant's book went into several editions - the fourth in 1805 certainly contained this illustration of two street carvings. The first includes the words: "M P A / The Kings Porte[r] and Dwarf" with two appropriate figures. It was in Pannier Alley / Bull Head Court, Newgate Street. The second has a boar's head and "I T 1668" and may be the sign of the Boar's Head in St Michael's Lane - perhaps Shakespeare's. Districts: City: Newgate, Eastcheap.
