Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1820-1850
Moor Park, Hertfordshire.
Moor Park, Hertfordshire - It was Benjamin Styles who employed Sir James Thornhill as architect and surveyor to build him a Palladian Mansion. The wall paintings are dated from 1732. By 1739 Styles was dead so couldn't have enjoyed his improvements for long. He was alleged to have spent £150,000, a considerable some of money for the time. The property was to pass through more hands until in 1828 it was sold to 2nd Earl of Grosvenor, who became wealthy from the development of property in London. On his death the property passed to his third son Robert the brother of the then Duke of Westminster. In 1919, the estate was sold to Lord Leverhulme, soap manufacturer and founder of Port Sunlight. Leverhulme, formed Moor Park Golf Club and the courses were constructed." - http://www.moorparkgc.co.uk/about.htm#
