Selsdon House, the seat of George Robert Smith Esq
Selsdon House was built in 1809 in the ‘castellated gothic’ character by William Coles. Soon after it was purchased by George Robert Smith, a wealthy banker and director of the East India Company, who presented this engraving for inclusion in Brayley’s History of Surrey (1841-48). The building was later the property of Bishop Thorold of Rochester, before being converted into a hotel.
