Mrs Pope as Britannia
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actress Mrs Pope in the role of Britannia. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments, notably on the dress accessories. The dress is of shaded silk and has a silver tassel. The shield is of metal foil, the lion is covered with brushed cotton with handdrawn facial features. Such portraits would have been sold for 1d plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
