Printed Ephemera — 1927
Metropolis
This programme was published for the British premiere of Fritz Lang's famous 1926 science-fiction film 'Metropolis'. The premiere took place at the Pavilion Cinema, Marble Arch; one of London's new generation of luxury cinemas. The cover shows one of the film's leading characters: the Robot Maria. The robot has been seen as representing fears about 'the new woman' of the 1920s. She is superficially female but lacks traditionally womanly qualities of kindness and compassion.
An illustrated article on the making of the film is included, as well as contributions from actors, cameramen and the original author of the story, Thea Von Harbou.
